The Aga Khan Academy Nairobi is operated by Aga Khan Education Service Kenya (AKESK), a non-profit organization, with close to a hundred years’ experience operating schools in Kenya. Our first formal schools were opened in 1918, and AKESK currently operates 11 schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret, serving close to 5,000 students with a quality, affordable education.Role Summary The English Teacher will deliver engaging, inquiry-based instruction in developing students’ skills in reading, writing, speaking and critical analysis. The role involves planning and implementing IB-aligned lessons, assessing learning using criterion-based approaches and fostering a deep appreciation for language and literature. The teacher will support holistic student development, promote independent thinking and contribute to a collaborative, inclusive learning environment. The position will also potentially serve as Head of Department, providing leadership, curriculum oversight and supporting continuous improvement in teaching and learning. Key Responsibilities Plan and deliver high-quality English lessons aligned with IB (MYP & DP) curriculum standards. Develop students’ skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and literary analysis. Foster critical thinking, creativity and appreciation of diverse texts and perspectives. Design differentiated learning experiences to meet diverse student abilities. Use inquiry-based and student-centered teaching approaches. Implement formative and summative assessments using IB criteria. Provide timely, constructive feedback and maintain accurate student progress records. Prepare students for internal and external assessments, including IB examinations. Create a safe, inclusive and engaging classroom environment. Act as a Homeroom Tutor, supporting students’ academic and pastoral needs. Contribute to co-curricular activities such as debate, drama or writing clubs. Engage actively with parents through conferences and communication channels. Collaborate with colleagues in curriculum planning and school initiatives. The requirements Qualifications and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in Education with specialization in English, Literature or a related field from a recognized university. Candidates currently in Kenya will require the Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC) registration. Demonstrated ability to teach in a diverse, multicultural, international school environment, with a strong understanding of student-centred, inquiry-based pedagogy. 2 to 3 years’ experience teaching IB Middle Years Programme and/or IB Diploma, or comparable curriculum, preferably within an international curriculum setting..
