Purpose of position: PEARLS MATRIX seeks versatile Research Midwives who has experience in community, clinical nursing and research skills within the context of clinical research. The incumbent will support study implementation through participant recruitment, clinical procedures, retinal imaging, sample collection, follow-up and accurate real-time data entry using REDCap, in compliance with study protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP). Duties and Responsibilities:

Pre-screening and screening potentially eligible participants to volunteer for participation in clinical research studies Obtain informed consent and ensure participant rights, safety and confidentiality are safeguarded Conduct scheduled study visits and perform required clinical assessments Perform retinal imaging (fundoscopy) ensuring quality and protocol adherence Perform/support laboratory and point-of-care tests (e.g., FBC, OGTT) Enter and manage study data in REDCap accurately and in real time ensuring the highest level of quality and integrity are maintained Maintain source documents and respond to data queries promptly Schedule participants upcoming visits as per study schedules and actively follow up participants to ensure retention Identify high-risk cases and facilitate timely referral and clinical care Ensure protocol adherence and report adverse events or deviations Maintain study equipment and ensure availability of supplies Participate in trainings, monitoring visits, and routine study meetings Work with community health promoters and peer leaders to effectively mobilize potential participants for clinical research studies Maintain appropriate study logs including screening, training and reimbursement logs Perform quality control and quality assurance activities as guided by site SOPs and Quality Management Plans Perform any other relevant clinical or research duties as assigned by the Hub research team

Job Specifications:

Either a Diploma in Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) , a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Public Health or an equivalent field Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and present a valid practicing license Two (2) years of continuous clinical experience with ANC, Maternity and Rural health experience. At least two (1) years’ prior experience conducting clinical research including maternal health clinical trials Good Clinical Practice and Human Subjects Protection Training certificates is an added advantage Experience and skills needed: Strong maternal health clinical skills, high accuracy and attention to detail, proficiency in Redcap or electronic data systems, excellent written and verbal communication skills.

 

Laboratory Manager

Purpose of Position:

The Laboratory Manager will provide overall leadership, coordination, and quality oversight of all study laboratory activities within the PEARLS MATRIX Study. The role ensures high-quality laboratory operations, compliance with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), proper sample management and effective integration of laboratory services within the clinical study workflow.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide overall management and coordination of all study laboratory activities Ensure implementation and compliance with the laboratory Quality Management System (QMS) Supervise sample collection, processing, storage and bio banking activities Oversee implementation and adherence to laboratory SOPs and study protocols Ensure quality assurance systems are implemented, including IQC and EQA programmes Coordinate sample shipment processes and ensure regulatory approvals are obtained and documented Ensure proper maintenance, calibration and functionality of laboratory equipment Supervise laboratory staff, including performance management, training, and mentorship Ensure accurate laboratory data management, documentation, and reporting practices Liaise with clinical teams to ensure effective laboratory clinic integration and workflow efficiency Ensure compliance with biosafety, ethical, and regulatory requirements Provide technical guidance and operational support to the study team and investigators.

Job Specifications:

Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or related field Must be registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) Valid practicing license Minimum five (5) years’ experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting At least three (3) years’ experience in a supervisory or management role in a laboratory Experience in clinical trials or research laboratory systems is required Strong experience in laboratory quality systems (QMS, IQC, EQA) and SOP management Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is an added advantage Training in Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) is required or highly desirable Strong leadership, coordination, and communication skills Good computer literacy (data systems, reporting, and documentation tools)

 

Sonographer

Purpose of Position:

The Sonographer will be responsible for performing high-quality retinal imaging (fundoscopy) for pregnant women enrolled in the PEARLS MATRIX Study. The role ensures accurate image acquisition, adherence to imaging protocols, and optimal data quality to support AI-assisted analysis and clinical research outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform retinal imaging (fundoscopy) for study participants according to protocol Ensure proper patient preparation, positioning and comfort during imaging procedures Maintain high-quality image acquisition standards and repeat poor-quality images where necessary Ensure correct labeling, documentation, and secure transfer of retinal images to study systems Conduct basic quality checks of captured images before upload Ensure adherence to study SOPs, infection prevention and data security procedures Maintain and care for fundoscopy equipment, reporting faults or maintenance needs promptly Support participant flow during imaging sessions in coordination with study staff Liaise with Research Midwives and clinical teams to ensure smooth integration of imaging into ANC workflow Participate in training, refresher sessions and study meetings as required Maintain confidentiality and comply with study protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP)

Job Specifications:

Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following areas Sonography, Radiography, Ophthalmic Imaging or an equivalent field. Valid professional registration/license with relevant regulatory body. Prior 2 years’ experience in ultrasound, ophthalmic imaging or retinal imaging is an added advantage. Experience in clinical research or maternal health studies is desirable. Training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is an added advantage. Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality diagnostic images. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a busy antenatal clinic environment.

 

Research Assistant

Purpose of position:

The Research Assistants will support study implementation through participant recruitment, clinical procedures, retinal imaging, sample collection, follow-up and accurate real-time data entry using REDCap, in compliance with study protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist in identifying and directing potentially eligible participants at the health facility to the study room in line with the study procedures. Support smooth participant flow during study visits, ensuring orderly movement through study procedures Enter study data into REDCap as guided, ensuring accuracy and timely submission of information Maintain and update simple study registers and tracking logs for screening, visits and follow-up of the study participants. Make reminder calls or messages to participants regarding upcoming study appointments and visits Follow up participants who miss scheduled visits to support retention and reduce loss to follow-up Assist with participants time/transport reimbursement and other duties as assigned. Assist in preparation, organization, and safekeeping of study materials, forms and workspace Support community mobilization activities in collaboration with community health promoters when required Follow instructions from supervisors at all times and maintain strict confidentiality of participant information.

Job Specifications:
