THE ROLE
This position seeks a motivated professional with excellent people skills, client and project management experience, proven communications capabilities and networks, and who is a strategic thinker that will thrive in an agile, fast-paced entrepreneurial working environment.
The ideal candidate has core competencies in content development, media relations, event management, advocacy, stakeholder and client engagement; understands global public health and development issues and is passionate about utilizing their skills to improve health and wellbeing around the world.
Directors at GHS lead teams and know how to devise a strategy and mobilize people to act, build expertise across wide-ranging topics and provide strategic advice to diverse audiences. Directors also have a sophisticated understanding and extensive experience of the media and communications landscape in Africa, communication best practices, media relations and content trends.
Specific Responsibilities Include
Communications
Simplifying complex concepts to make them accessible and actionable?to various stakeholder groups by developing and editing compelling content including key messages, fact sheets, speeches and talking points, briefing documents, press releases, media advisories and toolkits, opinion pieces, web articles, social media, multimedia/audiovisual content, etc. Developing and implementing robust communications and advocacy strategies that meet our clients’ needs while at the same time showcasing the full breadth of GHS’ service offering and positioning us as a valuable partner across Africa and beyond. Building and nurturing networks, including identifying the right media contacts for client pitches, conceptualizing and drafting compelling pitches, media outreach (media pitching) and developing relationships with reporters and editors from major national, regional and international outlets across the continent and beyond. Aside from media, the Director will also be expected to build and nurture strong relationships with clients, potential clients and other stakeholders within GHS’ areas of interest to raise the organization’s visibility and create opportunities for new and/or continued business. Positioning our clients as influential opinion shapers and high-level influencers by elevating their public profiles and enhancing their visibility through various platforms, including speaking opportunities (speeches, panel appearances, media interviews, etc.) and other thought leadership moments such as opinion pieces and social media commentary during key moments. Serving as a trusted thought partner to clients, providing high-level strategic advice on communications issues, including crisis communications response as needed. Supporting event management for GHS’ clients through efficient project management, including agenda shaping, speaker selection, partner engagement, content development, on-ground support and post-event reporting. Tracking and reporting on trends?in global health and development, new and traditional media, and any other key issues, innovations, events or dialogues that may impact GHS’ business or client work. Overseeing communications deliverables produced by teams, mentoring and guiding staff on effective communications tactics, and serving as the final quality control checkpoint on communications deliverables before they are shared with clients and other stakeholders. Introducing new and innovative communications approaches to enhance GHS' work and keep our offering cutting edge.
Advocacy
Identifying strategic moments and new champions to influence target stakeholders and amplify our clients’ goals, work and impact. Convening partners, influencers and decision-makers by conceptualizing, delivering and overseeing high-level in-person and virtual events, including identifying and engaging invitees and speakers, developing agendas or presentations and providing on-ground and virtual support as required. Building new coalitions of support to amplify key issues of importance to our clients, through dedicated outreach, organization and relationship management. Following and tracking trends in global health and development policies and funding opportunities to continuously deliver innovative strategies. Supporting GHS Africa leadership in convening partners, influencers, and decision-makers in health and development by working on major deliverables within high-level events, including conceptualizing sessions to meet advocacy goals, identifying and briefing invitees and speakers, and developing agendas and presentations.
Client/Project Management
Oversee all major deliverables by developing a vision and strategy to guide client and project management and delegating work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Manage client relationships, ensuring their needs are met and keeping executive management apprised of project development. Understand background and nuance across our priority issue areas to form compelling arguments and provide strategic counsel to clients. Coach and mentor junior staff members on writing, client-facing interactions, and time management skills. Ensuring materials developed by project teams are of high quality and are client ready. Manage project work plans and budgets to ensure timely completion of client deliverables. Organize and attend events and meetings with executive management on behalf of clients. Support business development by collaborating with teams to pitch for new projects and following up with existing clients to secure contract renewals. Serve as the Deputy to GHS Africa leadership across strategic, operational and representational duties as needed.

Fluent in English (written and spoken) Over 10 years of work experience Superior writing skills and proven experience in the development of excellent communications material Post-graduate degree in Journalism, Business Administration, Public Health, Public Policy, Public Administration or related fields In-depth or working understanding of health and development issues and socio-economic landscape across Africa, including but not limited to public health, policy, climate, education or development financing Journalism, communications or public relations experience Strong project management, presentation and organizational skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint and Excel Experience organizing conferences and events Experience managing teams and budgets Experience working with senior executives and leadership teams, such as C-suite members and board members
