The Kenya Film Commission successfully concluded a two-week intensive film and photography capacity building programme in Uriri Constituency, Migori County, training a total of 466 young creatives. The graduation ceremony for the participants was conducted on Thursday 4th June 2026, coinciding with the official launch of the Uriri Film Hub, marking a significant milestone in the growth and decentralization of Kenya’s creative economy. The programme, implemented in partnership with the Kenya Film School and the Office of Hon. Mark Nyamita, MP for Uriri Constituency, brought together aspiring filmmakers, photographers, and content creators for practical, hands-on training designed to equip them with industry-relevant skills. Participants underwent intensive training covering scriptwriting, directing, camera operations, sound production, and post-production techniques. The curriculum emphasized practical learning, enabling trainees to move from concept development to full production, while strengthening their ability to tell authentic local stories. This initiative is part of the Kenya Film Commission’s broader mandate to develop, promote, and regulate the film industry in Kenya by nurturing talent, supporting production, and expanding access to film infrastructure across the country. By establishing and activating community-based film hubs such as Uriri, the Commission continues to decentralize film resources beyond urban centers, ensuring that young people in rural and underserved areas can access training, equipment, and production spaces. This programme directly supports the Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA Plan), which prioritizes job creation, youth empowerment, and the growth of creative and digital economies as key drivers of inclusive economic development. Through targeted investment in skills development and creative infrastructure, the Uriri Film Hub initiative contributes to: Job creation and enterprise development within the creative sector Youth empowerment through practical skills training and mentorship Economic inclusion by opening up opportunities in rural and peri-urban areas Growth of the creative economy as a sustainable pillar of national development The establishment of the Uriri Film Hub will serve as a long-term creative space where trained youth can continue producing content, collaborating, and building viable careers in film and media. The Kenya Film Commission acknowledges the critical role of its partners in delivering this successful programme.  We extend our sincere appreciation to the Kenya Film School for their technical expertise and training delivery, and to the Office of Hon. Mark Nyamita, MP for Uriri Constituency, for facilitating community engagement and supporting the establishment of the hub. The completion of this programme marks the beginning of a new creative journey for the 466 trainees, who are now equipped with the skills and confidence to tell their own stories and contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s growing film industry. As the Uriri Film Hub officially opens its doors, it is expected to become a catalyst for local production, youth employment, and storytelling that reflects the lived experiences of the community. The Kenya Film Commission remains committed to building a vibrant, inclusive, and globally competitive film industry—one community at a time.
