As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally-owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. In Kenya, GIZ has been working for 43 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and for other international donors. GIZ is also working in Somalia on sectors such as infrastructural development, food and nutrition and better migration management. The projects and programmes are managed from GIZ’s country office in Kenya.

The Better Migration Management (BMM) program aims to improve migration governance in the region, and in particular to curb the trafficking of human beings and the smuggling of migrants within and from the Horn of Africa. BMM is implemented by GIZ in partnership with IOM, UNODC and CIVIPOL. The programme is co-funded by the European Union and the German Government.
